About Anduren Eliyata
We are a nonprofit, ACNC-registered Australian charity founded in October 2014. In Sinhala, our name means "from darkness to light" — and that is exactly what we deliver to poor students and families in Sri Lanka.
Who we are
Anduren Eliyata – Darkness to Light Incorporated was established on 28 October 2014 by members of the Sri Lankan-Australian community in Macquarie Fields, New South Wales. Our founders knew from personal experience what life without electricity means: children straining to read by kerosene flame, families ending their working day at sunset, and households spending scarce income on fuel just to see at night.
They resolved to do something direct and practical about it. Rather than funding large overheads, they built a simple pipeline: raise money in Australia, purchase quality solar-powered lighting units, and distribute them — together with scholarships, school equipment and clothing — to the students and families who need them most in Sri Lanka.
Twelve years later, more than 13,000 solar lights have been distributed. We remain a small, volunteer-run charity, registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), with our annual reports and financial statements publicly available on the Charity Register.

Governance and accountability
Our association is governed by a volunteer committee elected by members, responsible for program decisions, finances and compliance. Donations are receipted, spending is tracked against programs, and our accounts are reviewed before annual lodgement with the ACNC — a record we have maintained since 2014.
Distribution in Sri Lanka is carried out with trusted local community contacts who identify the households and students in greatest need, confirm delivery, and report back with records of where each consignment has gone.

Why solar light matters
Energy poverty is education poverty. Without electric light, a student's study day ends at dusk. Kerosene alternatives are expensive, fill homes with smoke, and cause burns and fires. A solar lighting kit costs around $50, charges free in daylight, and serves a family for years.
The outcomes compound: children complete homework and pass exams; parents extend income-earning work into the evening; families redirect kerosene money toward food and school fees. Light is the first domino.
