Solar Lighting Kits
We send solar-powered lighting units to poor students and families in Sri Lanka, replacing dangerous kerosene lamps with clean, free, reliable light for study and daily life.
Anduren Eliyata – Darkness to Light Incorporated is a nonprofit, ACNC-registered Australian charity. From our base in Macquarie Fields NSW, we send solar-powered lighting kits, scholarships, school equipment and clothing to poor students and families in Sri Lanka — more than 13,000 lights since 2014.
We are a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Our name says it all: in Sinhala, "Anduren Eliyata" means "from darkness to light".
In rural and impoverished communities across Sri Lanka, thousands of families have no reliable electricity. When the sun sets, children cannot study, families cannot cook or work safely, and homes rely on dangerous kerosene lamps and candles. A single solar-powered light changes all of that — for years.
Founded in October 2014 by members of the Sri Lankan-Australian community in New South Wales, our organisation collects donations in Australia and channels them into solar lighting kits, education scholarships, school equipment and clothing for the families who need them most. Over twelve years we have distributed more than 13,000 solar lights.
As a nonprofit, we have no shareholders and no paid fundraising machine. Our work is carried by volunteers, and our finances are reported annually to the ACNC and published on the Charity Register.
Three practical programs, one goal: opportunity for children and families living in poverty.
We send solar-powered lighting units to poor students and families in Sri Lanka, replacing dangerous kerosene lamps with clean, free, reliable light for study and daily life.
We offer scholarships to students from financially disadvantaged families, keeping bright children in school when poverty would otherwise force them out.
As needs arise, we supply clothing, books, stationery and school equipment so children can attend class prepared, equipped and with dignity.
Volunteer-run and lean — your gift goes straight to Sri Lanka, not to overheads.
Before receiving a solar kit, many of the students we support studied by kerosene flame or stopped studying altogether at dusk. After distribution, families tell us the same story: homework gets done, grades improve, and the nightly expense and smoke of kerosene disappears.
One light, one student, one future at a time — that is how 13,000 lights have changed thousands of households across Sri Lanka.
Our work continues year-round. Read dated updates and upcoming events on our news page.
Our winter appeal is funding the next consignment of solar lighting kits for distribution later this year. Every $50 lights another home.
A new group of students from financially disadvantaged families received scholarship support for the current school year.
Our latest annual reporting was completed and lodged with the ACNC in January 2026, continuing twelve years of transparent operations.
